How Much Mulch or Compost Do I Need?

Follow the instructions below to figure out how many cubic yards of compost, mulch or topsoil you need.

Calculate the Area of Your Garden

If you don't yet know the area of your garden, you can use the following site to draw an outline around your garden to get its area. To do this:

Click here to go to the area calculator website (site will open in a new window or tab).
On the site that opens, type in your address in the Search for Location: box.
Zoom in as far as you need so that you can draw an outline around your garden.
Click as many times as you need to outline your garden.
Depending on the size of your screen, you may need to scroll down to see the results.
Find the result in square feet under Output: Current Area, and copy or remember that number
Enter that number in the Area box below.
